Magic of the Mundane
“Its simply about being in the moment, consciously connecting, and being mindful that every ordinary moment has the potential to be extraordinary. I want them to know that you can deepen your relationships simply by making Magic of the Mundane.”
Last week, Sparkle and I did this by Baking…
Sparkle was involved in every step of the process, from start to finish. I asked her what she wanted to bake and she immediately came running out with her new My Little Pony coloring book. That poor thing has been begging me to bake a My Little Pony treat with her for years. Yes, literally, years. But I always assumed that the recipes would be “too junky”. This time, I resisted the urge to guide her towards something “healthier” and just said “OK!”
Of course, her eyes immediately began to sparkle…

I imagined something with marshmallows, and frosting, and sprinkles, and candy bits, and chocolate pieces. Something that would make my teeth ache just by looking at it. To my surprise, the recipe she chose wasn’t what I expected.
I asked her to write the grocery list according to what we were missing. If I were doing this with one of the younger ones, I would have had them cut out pictures from the circulars to make a picture list.
We headed out to Whole Foods Market and had a blast purchasing the ingredients we didn’t already have on hand. We played a simple game of “hot-cold” because when we are really connecting, any game gets us giggling. I love the silly things they come up with when its their turn to choose a game.

We didn’t rush any step in the process. Even when we realized that “maybe we should of read the directions all the way through before we started”, we just laughed at our folly. Because the recipe required that the dough be refrigerated for 3 hours, the cookies wouldn’t be ready for baking until after 10pm. So I had to stay up a bit later – what could go wrong?

Apparently, a lot. And there was no part of my early bird brain that could remember to take pictures at that time of night. Which suits me just fine, because now I can pretend that the cookies came out looking like the above picture.
But again, it wasn’t even about the cookies. Not at all. All I had to do was look over at Sparkle, eating her My Little Pony “cookies” with a spoon, her night owl eyes just twinkling away at me, and I knew in my heart that we had succeeded in making Magic of the Mundane.
Last week, you posted so many great responses, comments, and suggestions that I’ve been wondering… Would you be interested in participating in a weekly linky on how you make magic of the mundane too?

Stay tuned over the next few weeks as I share how applying Sofia’s Ideas on Simplicity, Frugality, Frivolity, and an Eco-Mentality helps us make Magic of the Mundane.
