I'm having a tough time with this because I am sooooo not a night person and I find myself preoccupied with all the things I have left to do before bedtime. I find that my mind starts to wander and it defeats the purpose - being connected & in the moment with them. I don't like the message that sends to my lovies. Errands are great too! I totally agree that anything can be made special - thanks for bringing that up. And thats exactly where I'm headed with all of this. With the oldest, it's been reading together before bedtime (2 whole chapters a night - whew!). With the baby, it's been running errands (I know, but she loves going in places and saying hi and helping mom out). Definitely need to do something bigger ... but not too big. I think your outlook on focusing on the time together vs. money spent is great - I think those events (the ones you can't buy) are where the best memories are built - focusing on the experience, the conversation, the creativity makes it a little more special somehow. My husband and I were just having this conversation yesterday about how we rarely took vacations as kids but when we did, we so appreciated them and loved every minute of it. Now I see kids on vacations complaining about the quality of the hotel etc. It's just sad. We are going to work hard at achieving a balance. Great post! You know my budget is small, and I'm the same as you that I don't want him to equate spending time together with buying things. We do the Okeeheelee Nature center a lot (free!! And close by). We hit the dollar section of Target or craft section of Walmart with a set amount of money and see what we can get to do together. He has really come to enjoy spending $5 on a movie rental and candy to watch at home much more than spending $20 to go to the movies. It's all about what we teach our kids and it's good that you saw the path you were going down, recognized you didn't like it and changed it.
