Magic of the Mundane

The children and I have been having our monthly Mommy & Me-s again.  I take one of the kids out with me for some individual time, while the rest of them are in Music Production class with Papa, one day a week.  We just do a simple rotation, going from oldest to youngest.  It’s been great, but I’ve been noticing that as the weeks go by, the kids want increasingly elaborate Mommy & Me-s.  This ultimately results in more money being spent, and I think it’s actually sending the wrong message.

I want my kids to learn that you can have a great time without spending a dime.  I want my kids to know that you don’t have to do anything or go anywhere “special” in order to make our time memorable.  I want my kids to understand that the amount of someone’s love is not to be measured by the amount of money they spend.  Quite the contrary.  Its simply about being in the moment, consciously connecting, and being mindful that every ordinary moment has the potential to be extraordinary.  I want them to know that you can deepen your relationships simply by making Magic of the Mundane.

So today, Sparkle and I are going to do just that.  And every week, every Mommy & Me, with every child, from here on out, will be an adventure made out of activities that could otherwise be less than magical.

Stay tuned over the next few weeks as I share how applying Sofia’s Ideas on Simplicity, Frugality, Frivolity, and an Eco-Mentality helps us make Magic of the Mundane.

We’ve experienced this too! Its so important to be able to just be together without needing something extra thrown in. Good reminder though. Thanks for stopping by Nalaville earlier today!

I love the idea of a mommy and me time. What a great way to get some special time with each one. I would love to be able to do that with each of my 4 boys.

It is hard sometimes not to get caught in the trap of doing “something” instead of learning to enjoy “nothing”. (Does that make sense??) With one child, all the time is “mommy and me” time, but I do go out of my way to do something special with him that gives him 100% of my focus. You know my budget is small, and I’m the same as you that I don’t want him to equate spending time together with buying things. We do the Okeeheelee Nature center a lot (free!! And close by). We hit the dollar section of Target or craft section of Walmart with a set amount of money and see what we can get to do together. He has really come to enjoy spending $5 on a movie rental and candy to watch at home much more than spending $20 to go to the movies. It’s all about what we teach our kids and it’s good that you saw the path you were going down, recognized you didn’t like it and changed it. There truly is magic in the ordinary if we only stopped to see it more often!
