February 2010 {Focus of the Month} Nutrition

February 9, 2010

February’s Focus of the Month, I’m ashamed to say, is Nutrition.  Why ashamed, you ask?  Because I’ve been a Wellness Coordinator with Juice Plus+ since 2003 and I feel like a total hypocrite!  And admittedly, I am!  Sparing you the details of the demise of our family’s nutritional status, at least for now, I will say that “when you know better, you do better”.  At least you’re supposed to.  The point is that I absolutely do know better, but I haven’t been.  Bad Mama!  Hence, the shame.

Let me add that in my experience, the idea of “good nutrition” is a relative thing, and a controversial thing, even amongst the experts.  If you ask 10 people what “good nutrition” means,  you’ll get 10 different answers.  Although my natural inclination was to do a complete overhaul in the kitchen, I reminded myself to approach our nutrition with simplicity & frugality too.

Same as before, we first had a discussion in a family meeting.  Everyone had the opportunity to speak their minds and contribute their ideas.  We decided to keep our nutritional goals to a minimum for now, and build on that foundation in future months.  Once we agreed on our plan & how we would reward ourselves, we posted our Focus of the Month next to our Track & Reward chart.

Our Nutrition Goals:

  1. Simplicity: Juice Plus+ regimen (capsules/chewables, Thins, & Complete)
  2. Frugality: Water as first beverage choice (juice as a treat)
  3. Frivolity: Dessert on Sundays & special occassions
  4. Eco-mentality: Menu plan centered around weekly CSA (community supported agriculture) farm share

I am well aware that there is a continuum when it comes to all things health related.  I am also aware that my extremist approach to things isn’t always conducive to lasting change.  I want our family to first get back to where we once were nutritionally, then revisit the idea of going further along the line.  Who knows – maybe a year from now we’ll all be raw foodies?!

This is great! I have strived to do this in my house, but I set way too many goals for me and M and don’t take into account how realistic they are. We both have big-picture goals that are vastly different (I need to lose weight, he needs to gain or at least maintain) but this post is a great reminder to me that day to day, our goals should be the same. Just baby steps to being healthier overall would benefit us both greatly. Thanks for the simple reminder of what is important!

Well, I think it was too much, too soon for us. I hope you’ll join us when we are ready to resume with this Focus of the Month.
